Emissions Inspection - Registration Information

I use a vehicle that belongs to Emory University. What do I need to know about its registration?
Fleet Services organizes an annual on-site emission inspection for Emory owned vehicles. An announcement about the date and time is sent out in early September. We post calendar events such as emissions testing or other scheduled items like liftgate checks, vehicle sales, training classes, and registration information.
  • Always ensure that the current registration card is inside the vehicle and that it matches that vehicle.
  • Check the date to make sure that the registration is current.
  • A copy of the insurance card should remain in the vehicle at all times.
  • If these documents are missing, please contact Fleet Services immediately.

What is my responsibility with regard to the annual registration for the Emory vehicle that I use?

Every year, Fleet Services conducts emission inspections of all Emory vehicles requiring one. The inspection is performed on campus in October. Inspection dates are announced in mid-September via email with an invitation to schedule the vehicle for the test.

Do all Emory vehicles require annual emissions inspections?

Vehicles require annual emissions inspection if it is three model years or older from the current date and weighing under 8,500 pounds, which includes most pickup trucks and sedans. More information: http://www.cleanairforce.com/motorists/emissions-testing/frequently-asked-questions/

What if I use an LSV (low-speed vehicle) with a license plate?
Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) do not require emission tests.
If my vehicle does not require an emission inspection, can Fleet Services obtain the vehicle registration without further action on my part?
Yes.  The annual registration will be completed by Fleet Services.
What do I do after the vehicle inspection test?

If the vehicle passes, Fleet Services will obtain the annual registration renewal for the vehicle.

What do I do if the vehicle I use fails to pass emission inspection?
If the vehicle fails to pass the initial inspection, it must be taken to the vehicle maintenance department of First Transit (or another vendor) to be checked out and prepared for retesting. Vehicles that continue to fail to pass can apply for a special exemption from the emission test through the Clean Air Campaign provided there is documentation showing that the vehicle has had approximately $850 in repair work in the past six months.
How quickly must I act if my vehicle fails to pass inspection?

Vehicles can retest at any time. Retests done within 30 days will avoid an additional charge for the emission inspection. Vehicles should be retested within 30 days of failing to pass inspection. Otherwise, the new registration will not be obtained in a timely manner and the additional charge will be incurred.

How does my vehicle registration proceed after passing emissions?
If the vehicle passes inspection, Fleet Services will obtain the renewal registration decal from the proper county. Decal pick-up times for new vehicle registrations will be communicated to all departments with vehicles from the Emory fleet. Decal pick-up for new vehicle registrations will be communicated to all departments with vehicles from the Emory fleet.
What do I do with the new vehicle registration after I pick it up at the designated location?
Place the decal on the license plate according to the registration instructions. Clean the area and remove expired decals if needed to obtain a secure, tight fit. Place the vehicle registration receipt form in the blue Emory folder inside your glove compartment.
