Frequently Asked Questions:

Transportation / Carpool Program

Q.

What is a carpool?

A.

A carpool is the shared use of a car, for the purposes of commuting, by the driver and one or more passengers. Learn more .

Q.

I want to carpool. How do I get started?

A.

Use the RideSmart ride matching service to find carpoolers in your area. The ride matching service maintains a database of individuals who work in the region and who have expressed an interest to commute to campus via carpool or vanpool. This commuter database uses a persons home address, work address and work hours to find others who live and work near them and who have similar schedules.

Q.

Why should Emory commuters register their carpools?

A.

Emory commuters who register their carpools qualify for special, University-sponsored incentives. All members of the carpool must have an application on file at the Parking Office (located in the Lowergate deck) to be considered for the special incentives.

Q.

Who is eligible to carpool?

A.

Active full-time regular and active part-time regular (working a minimum of 20 hours per week) Emory University and Emory Healthcare employees whose primary work location is on or near Clifton Road are eligible to participate.

Q.

How do I apply to become a carpool member?

A.

Each member of a carpool must complete the carpool application form . Forms are also available at the Parking Office at Lowergate parking deck. Each carpool member must submit their vehicle registration with vehicle identification number for all vehicles that will be brought to the Emory campus.

Q.

What incentives are offered to carpoolers?

A.

Depending on the type of carpool, Emory provides reserved and unreserved parking spaces at a discounted rate (free in some instances) in various decks and lots on campus.

The Occasional Parking Permit allows employees to park in a designated parking deck (24 days per year) when it is necessary to drive to work.

Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) provided through the Atlanta Regional Commission provides commuters who carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or take transit to work with up to five free taxi rides home from work annually if one of the following emergencies arises. Learn more here.

A discounted Zipcar membership is also provided. Zipcars allow Emorys faculty, staff and students to commute with the Universitys Commute Options program, and have access to cars on campus and get around during the workday, if needed. Learn more here.

Q.

I am an alternative commuter and have an unplanned emergency and need to leave campus early. What are my options?

A.

For commuters with unexpected emergencies, the Atlanta Regional Commission offers a Guaranteed Ride Home program. This program is designed to provide registered commuters participating in commute options programs with a ride to either park-n-ride lots or directly home. Learn more here.
